Who I Am

A Little About Me

Hello! My name is Leila Valadez. I was born and raised in Santa Barbara and I am a senior at bishop Garcia Diego High school. I'm the middle child of two older siblings and 2 younger siblings. I would describe myself as someone who is dependable and diligent. I’ve always been a person who finishes every task they are given even if that means staying up until 4 in the morning and overcoming obstacles that are placed in my path. Since I come from a large Hispanic family I was taught values in which family is the most important part of your life and contribution to who you become. I’ve had the responsibility of caring for my younger sisters ever since I was 10. Since my mom works every day, this includes during the summer and after school and right now since all of us are home due to COVID-19. I am very passionate in helping people as my grandpa was diagnosed with alzheimers and my sister was diagnosed with autism. I’ve grown up learning how to find solutions and make my family members feel comfortable as well as safe in our community. I also find empowerment when advocating for those who receive injustice including racism and disabilitiy discrimination as I have experienced and witness them first handedly. I have enjoyed volunteering at our local Santa Barbara cottage Hospital as a patient and visitor ambassador for two years now where I’ve been given the opportunity to meet and assist people from different age groups and ethnicities, which has allowed me to improve my communication skills and influence me to want to work in a hospital.

Interesting Factoid

I have learned conversation level Korean and French.

Volunteer Experience

Santa Barbara, CA, USA

Jun 2019 - Present
Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Volunteer Ambassador Services exists to assist patients and visitors to ensure that they are comfortable and have an hardship free experience. We aim to safely guide and protect the community. As a patient and visitor ambassador, I've been given the opportunity to meet and assist people from different age groups and ethnicities, which has allowed me to improve my communication skills. I mentored new volunteers and showed them how to answer the phones, discharge patients, and guide visitors. I delivered notes and brought patients items.

Jun 2017 - Sep 2018
The reading program encourages the youth to read for prizes and allows for them to share what they learned. While providing a safe environment, kids are able to gain motivational, writing, and communication skills. I read and listened to children explain the books they read. I encouraged the kids to speak and practice their explanation skills. I helped organize entertainment shows on the weekends and was in charge of shelving movies and music. I also organized and cleaned books, movies and music while directing people to item they wanted.

Clubs and Communities

Debate/Speech Club

Sep 2018 - Jun 2019
I debated other club members and advocated for topics involving society. As everyone shared their opinion I learned that without evidence the argument is flawed. My research and presentation skills advanced since we debated every week. I had the role of recording the arguments and ideas presented from each team and experienced public speaking.
