My dad just said to me this week "How does the young girl who was afraid of everything turn into a woman afraid of nothing?" Now I am not sure I agree with him...I still do have fears...I just don't let them stop me now.
Born and raised in Hudson, Ohio, to an engineer father, a RN mother and a resoundingly smart overachieving elder sister, I was known as the not so smart one "but she works hard." Later in life a very good friend said, "The one who works hard is the smart one..." and I choose to believe him to be right.
As a fitness minded youth I was immersed in the health and wellness industry. I was first exposed to physical therapy after a knee injury my therapist liked to call "growing pains" when I was 11. Then and there, I decided I wanted to enter the physical therapy profession. I worked hard through high school graduating with honors and earning a full scholarship to Stark State College for Physical Therapist Assisting. After I graduated with honors I wanted to continue my education but first wanted to get real field experience. I am so happy I did. I found myself in a small orthopedic physician owned outpatient clinic where I was given the opportunity to run the everyday operations of the business and treat patients. I took a failing clinic and turned it into a thriving business.
That is were I first fell in love with marketing! After all, if you can market to a depressed, chronic pain, legally opiate addicted patient to show up to therapy three days a week for 6,8,10 weeks, go through a series of stretching, stabilizing and strengthening exercises that may in the short term cause them more pain, you can market ANYTHING!
I left my clinic to challenge myself, once again, as a Wellness Director of a hospital. Talk about a hard crowd! I am, in a sense, marketing wellness to a group of physicians, nurses and professional who KNOW what to do...they know the importance of health and they choose to live an unhealthy lifestyle because of many reasons including time constraints and stress. No problem I thought I can do this...and I did. I earned my certificate from the American Association of Drugless Practitioners and dove into this position head first. I created an employee wellness program and also launched community wellness programs including The Doctor's Order, a partnership with local restaurants to encourage healthy eating. But as you could guess my story doesn't end here.
I earned my BA in Marketing and graduated Summa Cum Laude...yes...yes "not the smart one." I currently use my degree securely as a business development director. But I still wanted more. I thought, I still have a love and passion for health and wellness, how can I continue exploring this part of my career? Well you guessed it....Johanna Tanno Consulting.
With my own consulting business the sky is literally the limit. I am the Executive Director of a non-profit organization called the Wellness 360 Conference. (visit wellness360conference.com) where I get the privilege to lead an amazingly talented team and support those who are leading the wellness charge at work, in the community or at home. I support multi-million dollar companies on idea storming and branding for new initiatives and special projects. I speak nationwide on health and wellness topics. I assist in planning weddings, anniversaries, baby showers and corporate parties. Oh...and did I mention I'm a travel agent (www.destinationsbyjohanna.com)
