My life journey began many decades back in a small village in the southern tip of Sri Lanka (an island of 25 Million people, located south of India), called Kapuwatte. After 6 years primary education, I did my middle school in the city, Weligama and high school in Ratmalana, near the Capital, Colombo. After year 12, I got admitted to the beautiful scenic university of Peradeniya in central Sri Lanka to pursue a special degree in chemistry in the science faculty. Upon graduation, I worked as an assistant lecturer for one year before moving to chemical and food industries in Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia. After 6 years in industry, I decided to pursue my dream of doing post-graduate studies and got admitted to university of Kansas in the USA for a PhD program in analytical chemistry. Upon successfully completing my degree, I moved to New Jersey to join Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical company. After working there for over 22 years, decided to retire and moved to Maryland found a job at United States Pharmacopoeia as a scientist.
I have 2 brothers and twin sisters, all live in Sri Lanka, and my father was a school principal, and passed away in 1988 when I was in Kansas and my mother was a full time housewife and passed away in 2018 after battling with cancer for 2 years.
I am married to Ferial, who is an accountant by profession, and we have two beautiful children. My son Atif had his BS and Masters degrees in Aerospace engineering from the university of Maryland, and working for a satellite company in DC. My daughter graduated from The College of New Jersey with a Bachelors degree in Journalism and creative writing and is actively looking for a suitable position in industry.
