I spent 3 amazing weeks mixing cement and laying bricks in the jungle working with a diverse team of 12 volunteers--strangers to each other, at first---from all over the US. We built cinderblock homes for 2 familes who had been living under tents their entire lives. These families were the kindest people I have ever met.
When the homes were complete, the families performed a blessings ceremony for our Habitat team that I will never forget:
Each of us lined up.
Then, a little girl we'd worked and played with for the past few weeks went down the line and tied a piece of string (like a bracelet) on our wrists.
The family members---including extended relatives who'd traveled for the ocassion---each followed behind the girl, tying knots on our bracelets. Each knot was supposed to represent a blessing.
I left that bracelet on for weeks; my heart couldn't stand to cut it off. I kept it <3
