Who I Am

A Little About Me

I am Austin Davis Crossley a college bound Conard High School senior, West Hartford, Connecticut. Many words describe me but I would describe my greatest strength as having tenacity. A snapshot of where I have been and my actions today, keeps me focused on pursuing my dreams. Statistics do not begin to speak about lives that are forever changed due to injury, emotional and mental health problems caused by addiction. It doesn’t speak of the families that are destroyed. My story does; I have a voice. My mom and sister have the disease of addiction and it has had a big effect on me. Some of these effects are measurable, often the turmoil inside is not. My parents got divorced when I was young and our suburban family life on Long Island was forever gone. My dad, and my mom’s family lived nearby. We lived with my mom; until we didn’t. My mom began to drink, starting blacking out and became abusive. New York State Child Protective Services got involved. My dad fought hard and he was awarded custody of us. Within days of the Judges decision, we moved to Connecticut. We lived with my dad, his parents and began the next chapter of our lives. My mom was not there for important things or even the little things. I used to cringe when kids would ask me where my mom was. At 14, I was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety. My tenacity kept me focused on my school work, after school clubs, my family, the gym, and working at Target. It has kept a spirit of determination in me. At the gym, we joke about the fire in our belly. Conard’s school principal selected me to serve on the Principal’s Advisory Committee. Within weeks of being part of the store’s opening crew, Target’s management team selected me to supervise and train new team members on the selling floor. I have learned to appreciate and enjoy being with my mom. She lives in the Bronx, NY which is an interesting place! I am there for my sister’s successes and struggles. My dad and I are tight. He is a Registered Nurse who supports us and our new blended family on his own. COVID 19 has been especially crazy as he works in a large hospital in Hartford, CT. Life experience also brings out my greatest weakness. I can be hard on myself and too caring about others. For example, I am in AP classes and I find myself as the go to guy in study hall. My grade in one class slipped because I prepared less for myself. I get aggravated with myself when I don’t strike the right balance. I have to get over this! My dream is to complete college in four years with as little debt as possible. When I go, my tenacity and caring for others will come with me!

Interesting Factoid

I taught my mom how to throw a football.

What I Do

Professional Experience

Check Out Advocate (fun marketing title), FOS Trainer

Jul 2019 - Present
My role varies from shift to shift but I work wherever needed in the front of the store with guests. In the first month of my employment I was asked to work in Asset Protection. I had to remind them that I was 16 and not eligible to do so! After three months of employment, the management team made me a Front of the Store Trainer which is pretty cool. I work with new hires to get them in the flow of the store. The team at the store I am at (Bishops Corner, West Hartford, CT) works really well together. Management knows I am all business but enjoys my humor and my low key style. I appreciate that they appreciate how I represent the brand! They wanted me to go into their management training program, but they know college first. Maybe they'll pay for my grad school should I go that route, but first things first!
